Swan Lake & Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary is pleased to offer a summer job opportunity to a
youth (15- 30 years) with an interest in natural areas management, horticulture, conservation
biology, geography, environmental studies or biology. The successful candidate will support our
many programs including: ecological restoration projects, volunteer coordination, site maintenance,
building maintenance, trails maintenance, weed control, occasional custodial tasks, and general
labour including heavy lifting and carpentry. The main task will be the control of invasive species
particularly English ivy, Himalayan blackberry, Daphne, Scotch broom, English hawthorn and Privet.

Eligible Student Participants

To be eligible to participate in this initiative, individuals must meet the Canada Summer Jobs criteria.

  • Able to use tools such as lawn mowers, brush cutters, garden tools, shovels etc.
  • Ability to work with volunteers
  • General labour: trail maintenance, carpentry, landscaping, weeding
  • Sciences: Plant identification, propagation, general biology
  • Invasive Plant Management: Plant Identification; best practices for control
  • Valid Class 5 drivers licence
  • Willing to work outdoors in all kinds of weather
  • Ability to work independently and have demonstrated the ability to work as part of a team
  • Ability to identify hazards and work in a safe manner (need to wear CSA certified steel toed
    boots and other personal protective equipment for some tasks)
  • Willing to work some evenings or weekend days

The Student Field Assistant will be working in all weather conditions often handling power tools
including brush cutters, weed whackers, mowers, etc. At all times the Restoration Technician is expected
to be a professional and well-prepared representative of Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary in public and
partner interactions.
The above statements are intended to describe the general nature of this work however the list is not
exhaustive and other duties and responsibilities will occur. SLCHNS retains the right to amend
responsibilities as needed.

Duration and Hours of Work

Employment Duration: dependent on the Canada Summer Grant (expect at least 8 weeks up to 16 weeks)
Work will be conducted with adherence to COVID-19 safety practices.

Remuneration: $14.60/hour – 35 hours/week
