The Research Culture and Learning Officer supports the advancement of equity, diversity, inclusion, and reconciliation within ACET by leading the implementation of the ACET EDI Action Plan. Reporting to the Manager/Director, the the Research Culture and Learning Officer designs, delivers, and tracks cross-institutional EDI and Indigenous-focused training, contributes to inclusive recruitment and retention strategies, and ensures alignment with CFREF, UVic, and partner university EDI frameworks.

Objectives:

  • Lead the design and coordination of EDI and Indigenous training across ACET.
  • Support equitable recruitment, retention, and research practices.
  • Implement and monitor ACET’s EDI Action Plan in alignment with institutional and funder requirements.
  • Track and report on EDI initiatives and their impact.
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners to advance equity, diversity, inclusion, and reconciliation.
Job Requirements

University degree in a related field (e.g. human resources management, social justice, sociology, education, public administration, psychology) and a minimum of 3 years of related professional experience in delivering training and implementing best practices related to equity, diversity and inclusion. Experience in an academic setting is highly valued. Equivalent combinations of education, training and/or experience may be considered.

Experience:

  • Experience designing, developing and implementing programs and practices that advance equity, diversity and inclusion.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong understanding of EDI principles, frameworks, and best practices, especially in research and academic settings.
  • Knowledge of the issues facing historically and systemically marginalized groups, and the dynamics of prejudice and discrimination.
  • Content expertise and knowledge of research findings/best practices in the EDI landscape.
  • Familiarity with inclusive hiring, recruitment, and retention practices.
  • Awareness of Indigenous history, protocols, and Truth and Reconciliation principles in Canada.
  • Experienced in working across departments, silos, and partner organizations, including providing strategic advice to leadership personnel.
  • Demonstrated ability to design, coordinate, and deliver impactful training programs grounded in equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) principles.
  • Strong interpersonal, facilitation, and communication skills in a collaborative, collegial environment.
  • Proven ability to lead complex, multi-stakeholder projects and coordinate effectively across diverse teams and institutions.
  • Skilled at engaging collaborators with competing priorities and building equitable relationships across internal and external networks.
  • Able to build consensus, navigate conflict, and apply creative problem-solving approaches in sensitive or high-stakes contexts.
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to gather, interpret, and synthesize data into meaningful insights and actionable recommendations.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and shifting demands.
  • Demonstrated professionalism, sound judgment, and discretion when handling sensitive information and navigating complex power dynamics.
  • Self-motivated and adaptable, with a strong commitment to continuous learning and to advancing institutional and community-based EDI goals.
  • Comfortable facilitating engagement processes that center inclusion, accessibility, and community-informed practice.
  • Effective team contributor who collaborates and negotiates across diverse groups to achieve shared objectives.
