Reporting to the Senior Manager Research Security and Innovation at IPO, the Research Security Specialist (RSS) will join UVic’s Research Security Unit (RSU) and contribute in the key areas of research security and compliance to support the university’s effort in fostering research partnerships in national and international settings while considering national security, research integrity and academic freedom.  
 

Job Requirements

The position requires a minimum of Bachelors degree in Engineering, Science, International Relations or related discipline. A Masters or PhD degree is an asset. A minimum of 2 years professional experience in research security or research administration is also an asset.

Experience requirements:

  • Experience in or knowledge of conducting open source due diligence for research security considerations
  • Experience in or knowledge of best practices for ensuring compliance with export and import controls, sanctions and research security policies
  • Experience in developing effective training materials 
  • Experience in handling confidential and sensitive materials

Skill requirements:

  • High level of discretion and ability to handle and communicate sensitive and confidential information
  • Ability to efficiently gather information from open sources such as online databases and websites
  • Ability to connect the dots using open source information and draw insightful conclusions  
  • Ability to develop and deliver impactful training materials, workshops, and presentations
  • Analytical skills with an attention to detail, ensuring comprehensive research security measures
  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to deliver effective presentations to large groups and diverse environment
  • Problem-solving capabilities, enabling effective resolution of complex research security challenges
  • Excellent diplomatic skills, facilitating successful interactions and discussions relating to sensitive matters
  • Ability to collaborate with cross-functional groups and people from diverse backgrounds 
  • In-depth understanding of research security policies, programs, and regulations, ensuring compliance and best practices
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to lead and monitor multifaceted initiatives
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and adeptness at fostering collaboration across various departments and organizational levels
  • Familiarity with university research administration and grant management processes
  • Prior experience in working with research security issues within an academic or research environment is an asset
  • Familiarity with OSINT tools for conducting open source due diligence is an asset
  • Commitment to valuing the principles of truth, reconciliation and respect, equity diversity and inclusion, and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment 
  • Proficiency in using MS Office software
